Italian experimental filmmakers Yervant Gianikian and Angela Ricci Lucchi discovered archival footage shot near Mount Adamello along the border of Italy and Austria) between 1915 and 1918, and have fashioned the newsreels into a meditation on the violence of World War I. The directors manipulate the speed and colors of the images and have married them to readings from diaries written by Italian and Austrian soldiers who served near the mountain, as well as passages from the journals of Robert Musil, to haunting effect. This was Gianikian and Lucchi's second project based on found footage from this period, following Prisoners of the War in 1996.
