Synopsis by Janiss Garza
Beam (Gladys Hulette) is a New York City version of Pollyanna. She has a boarding house in Washington Square where she takes care of her blind father (J.H. Gilmour). Her brother (William Parke Jr.) is an enlisted man supposedly fighting in Mexico, and Beam enjoys telling her father tall tales of the young man's heroic exploits. She finds a sweetheart in the wealthy Donald Morton (Richard Barthelmess), whose hypochondriac father just happens to move into Beam's boarding house. One day, while Beam is reading to her father, her brother appears. He has deserted, and although Beam tries to hide him from their father, he hears his son's voice, and Beam lies and say that he's home on furlough. While she embraces her wayward brother, Donald shows up and believes that Beam is involved with someone else. Eventually Colonel Thompson from the regiment (William Dudley) arrives for Beam's brother, and to avoid hurting the father, he pretends that the boy is on furlough. He takes his AWOL charge back to camp, and Beam explains everything to Donald.
