Review by Michael Costello

Dolly Parton stars as the host of a call-in radio show host in Barnet Kellman's Capra-esque comedy about a woman of humble origins who hits it big. It's probably impossible for anyone to dislike Dolly Parton and the movie depends on that kind of good will to carry the film, but her charm can only take it so far. As the straight-talkin' salt-of-the-earth woman who accidentally falls into a radio slot answering questions about personal problems, Parton is believable in a character not far from her own persona. To generate some narrative interest, the filmmakers provide a romance with an investigative reporter (James Woods) who has set out to unmask her fake academic claims, but to see the two together is to understand what is meant by lack of chemistry.
