There's something sort of endearing about this softcore sex flick, what with its complicated plot, nearly feminist message and serious (if somewhat dated) view of the professional sphere. The acting's about what you'd expect from a bunch of Playboy bunnies, but the characters are a nice collection of cinematic archetypes: the no-good gigolo, the back-stabbing boss lady, the plucky entrepreneur, and the go-girl best friend. This being an adult film, the performers show a bit more skin than more legitimate Hollywood actors might -- but not a lot more. It's hard to imagine anybody getting off on something so silly, but take away the embarrassing simulated sex and you've got a perfect televised companion for a night of insomnia. Staying on Top may come with an embarrassingly low-rent pedigree, but if it weren't for this sort of soft-focus throwback to the plot-driven porn of the '70s, Cinemax would have nothing to show after dark.
