Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Debuting over Britain's ITV in 1980, the elaborate game show Square One was initially hosted by Nick Turnbull, assisted by comely twin beauty contest winners Zoe and Gay Spink. On each episode, two "civilian" contestants answered general-knowledge questions, whereupon their celebrity partners moved upward or downward, like chess pieces, on a huge 44-square board. Whoever won the first rounds earned 250 pounds, which the celebrities turned over to charity; the winner was also given the opportunity to earn a bonus by returning his or her partner to Square One with a volley of additional correct answers. In one of the game rounds, the celebrities were required to perform a stunt or an imitation to tote up additional points. Joe Brown, one of the "star" contestants during the series' first season, later took over the hosting chores. Square One was seen until 1984.
