Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This program explores the need for a relationship between spirituality and the intellect. Jacob Needleman acts as host in this examination of the material and spiritual aspects of human experience. He maintains that the one-sided materialism of modern man, devoid of an informing presence of spirituality, threatens the very existence of the earth and its inhabitants. He presents the teachings of the philosopher Socrates as an antidote to materialistic thinking. Socrates was said to never take a significant action without first consulting his daimon, who served as his guide in the world of the intellect.
