Synopsis by Alice Day

East Timor is located on the Malay Archipelago, and was once a colony of the Portuguese. After Indonesian troops invaded the small kingdom in 1975, approximately 200,000 residents lost their lives in the ensuing violence. As the remaining inhabitants are forced to adapt to a new culture, only the Catholic Church there has remained free of oppression. Sometimes I Must Speak out Strongly looks at the efforts of its leader Bishop Carlos Ximenes Belo to publicize the plight of East Timor. The bishop was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1996, which he shared with an East Timor activist.
