Review by Michael Costello

Given Ridley Scott's career, this is a surprisingly standard cop thriller given some energy by a feisty Lorraine Bracco. A working-class police detective (Tom Berenger) is assigned to a unit providing round-the-clock protection to the key witness in a mob trial, stunning socialite Mimi Rogers. As the two get to know each other, a romance develops between them. Less a thriller than a working-class fairy tale about a guy making it with a woman far out of his league, the film seems to make more of the cop's response to her wealth, and the opulence of the seemingly endless rooms of her apartment, than to his chemistry with her. The best scenes in the film are those between the detective and his wife (Bracco) who instinctively senses that her husband has been parking in the forbidden zone. However, the suspense in this almost too-simple film is not well handled, and by the time the movie arrives at the finale, it's difficult to care what happens. Berenger, a serviceable actor in an action context, has never seemed comfortable in a romantic lead, and he's no different here. The same could be said for the talented Rogers, whose aloofness tends to work against her in the film. On a more positive note, Scott's photography is typically gorgeous and, as previously stated, Bracco is excellent.
