Review by Mike DiBella

Yet another high-school romance drama written by the king of '80s teen pics, John Hughes, Some Kind of Wonderful is filled with the unrequited-love triangles and melodrama common to Hughes' films. Still, this effort lacks the charm of such Hughes-directed efforts as Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club. The story pans out like this: poor boy meets rich girl, rich girl leaves boyfriend for poor boy, poor boy's tomboy friend realizes she loves him, rich girl and poor boy are not meant to be, poor boy and tomboy friend fall in love. Howard Deutch directs with a minimum of flair or wit; with a plotline like this, however, the key grip could have performed similarly. Despite strong performances from such future luminaries as Eric Stoltz, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Lea Thompson, the movie is a mostly a cheesy, sentimental affair.
