Review by Buzz McClain

Smash Cuts is a collection of adventurous film shorts presented in the manner of a television variety show. Most of them are very funny, but even the ones that don't hit the high-water mark have enough amusing material to keep the giggles coming. Highlights include a spot-on documentary about fictitious endangered species in Ohio (reminiscent of the best of the old SCTV television show), an encounter with two slacker space aliens (the sight gag of one of them spewing copy machine toner from his bum is worth the rental price alone), and a can't-believe-your-eyes episode called "Sunday's Game" in which four little old ladies, uttering the most banal dialogue possible, get together for a casual game -- of Russian roulette. Chaotic interviews with many of the filmmakers are included following the program.
