Slow Boat From Surbaya is a six-part series exploring the influences of Western, Islamic, Indian, and Chinese cultures on South East Asia. It delves into the cultural complexities and unique synergy generated from the region's rich past and dynamic present. Volume three, Filipinas -- The Women of the Philippines, focuses on the character of the women of this Western Pacific Ocean country. Since precolonial days, Filipino women have participated in high positions of society and today, many participate fully in their culture. The program introduces an activist nun seeking justice for sugar workers living in poverty and a social worker fighting for women's rights. Other programs in the series are Post Colonial Waltz, Diplomatic Thais, Five Faces of God, Rich, Clever, Homeless, and Red Pride, Red Sorrow.
