Those who long for the halcyon days of the Police Academy franchise need look no further than Slackers, a post-teen, gross-out, campus sex farce that makes the fatal mistake of asking the audience to sympathize with its glamorized yet unglamorous, uninterestingly amoral, and completely unfunny schemer protagonists. First-time (and it shows) director Dewey Nicks doesn't even seem to know what he has. In a cast featuring Rushmore's loopily inspired Jason Schwartzman and two off-the-wall veterans of teen TV (Freaks and Geeks' Nick Segel and The Adventures of Pete and Pete's Michael C. Maronna), Nicks wastes time on the bland antics of perma-void pinup Devon Sawa and his somnambulant love interest James King. With its graphic references to masturbation, sado-masochism, and geriatric fornication, Slackers may earn some points with the cult comedy crowd, but don't be fooled: This is Hollywood moviemaking at its most desperate and generic.
