Very difficult to understand, the animated short film Tale of Tales does evoke a sense of melancholy and nostalgia even if you're not sure quite why. The little wolf is very cute, especially in the carefully observed moments when he tries to eat a hot baked potato. It's a good thing this is a short film, because the lack of dialogue and nonlinear structure makes it move extremely slow. For viewers with no working knowledge of the history of postwar Russia, the social commentary is likely to be lost. But the emotional impact is still pretty strong in the more general themes of lost childhood, motherhood, and visual memories. For patient audiences who appreciate experimental animation, Tale of Tales offers a sad and poignant experience.
