Indian filmmaker T.S. Nagabharana directs the melodrama Singaravva, based on the novel by Chandrashekhar Kambar. Young woman Singari (Prema) is married off to a dead man so that her selfish upper-caste father Gowda can take his land. She's then married to the high-ranking, yet impotent, Desai. Still yearning for a baby, she gets impregnated by servant Mariya who is seeking revenge against Gowda. Singaravva was shown at the 2003 Karlovy Vary Film Festival as part of the "Another View" program.
