Synopsis by Sally Barber

Situated in the center of Tuscany, between the Chianti area and Maremma, Siena is one of Italy's most beautiful cities. During the Medieval and Renaissance periods, Siena was renowned as a thriving center of commerce and a flourishing environment for artists, craftsmen, and saints. It is recognized as one of the major centers of the Medieval and Renaissance cultures. The many churches, palaces, and military structures that survived from this period serve as testimony to the glory and sophistication of Sienese civilization. This video, shot on-location, focuses on Siena's civic and religious institutions, the municipal government, the cathedral, and the Hospital of the Scala. Contemporary sources gracefully illustrate the refined society of the city's golden age.
