Synopsis by Jonathan Crow
Sohrab Modi directs this melodrama on the decline of India's once powerful aristocracy. The film centers on wizened patrician Jaspal Singh (Modi), who passionately believes that one's birth is the sole yardstick for which one and all should be judged. Having a disdain for money common with people of his class, he soon succumbs to the nefarious workings of avaricious moneylenders and is forced to sell his ancestral estate to a common worker turned millionaire named Durgaprasad (Mubarak). As Jaspal himself is forced to pick up a hoe and work the land like a peasant, he grows ever more obsessed with his daughter's marriage, blind to the fact that his sole salvation is the very merchant of low-birth who bought his house.
