Synopsis by Mark Deming
Explorer Ernest Shackleton's most famous and fabled voyage turned out to be one destined to fail. In 1914, Shackleton and his crew were determined to become the first men to journey to the South Pole on foot. However, their ship became trapped in ice en route and the men found themselves stranded in the icy wastes of the Antarctic. Determined to see that his men arrived home alive, Shackleton organized a rescue mission, and against almost impossible odds, he and a skeleton crew using crude maps piloted the ship H.M.S. James Caird back to their campsite and rescued the men. Shackleton's Boat Journey: The Story of James Caird is a documentary which tells the thrilling true story behind one of the most daring rescues ever attempted at sea.
