Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

The human face of the sufferings endured by Jews in Hungary during World War II is brought forward in this story of slowly increasing persecution and its effect on the sheltered life of Eva, a romantic thirteen-year old girl from a wealthy family. The story is narrated by the girl, based on her diary. Though they habitually kept a low profile, the first intimation of serious trouble is when her usually doting family omits to celebrate her birthday: her grandmother says that due to the suffering of their fellow countrymen, it would be unkind to "show off" in that manner. Though she sees relatives arrested and others forced to wear a yellow Star of David, the situation doesn't become real to her until her bicycle is confiscated, after which the drama accelerates.
