Review by Jason Buchanan

A strange and original little horror film that unfortunately fails to take root before withering up completely at about the two-thirds mark, The Gardener tells the bizarre tale of a listless socialite who falls under the spell of a mysterious gardener with the power to conjure up some of the most unusual, soul-sucking flora ever to grace the screen. It's hard to tell just where it all went wrong with The Gardener, but the most obvious place to begin laying the blame would be with the screenplay. Despite an interesting setup and a unique villain, writer/director James H. Kay just can't seem to decide whether he's more interested in making a horror film or a modern variation on the Greek tale of Persephone. Of course, it doesn't help that the mystery of the malevolent gardener is never truly explained -- or that former Warhol mainstay Joe Dallesandro possesses all the screen presence of a Calvin Klein model who's suffered a closed head injury -- but when watching The Gardener, one can't help but feeling there may have been a work of strange beauty attempting to emerge from the soil that somehow managed to get strangled by the weeds.
