When wealthy, churlish Mayor Séraphin Poudrier (Pierre Lebeau) agrees to pay off her father's debts in exchange for her hand in marriage, the young women reluctantly submits. Later, when Alexis returns home to find his future bride in the arms of another man, he recognizes the complexity of the predicament, and struggles with his initial instincts to win her back.
