Review by Jason Clark

This jejune, often sloppy action comedy pretty much defines the saying "If you liked the first one..." except that the first one in this case isn't much to write home about. The execution is a bit more brisk this time around, effectively zipping stars Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker around its standard-issue story, but when it's all over, there's very little viewers can take with them, even for routine entertainment. The duo has some fun with the material and thankfully doesn't appear to be taking the proceedings too seriously; however, their repartee does not invite comparison to the great comedy teams of all time and director Brett Ratner is far too relaxed to give the banter any meaning beyond a tossed-off, literal one. After making a bold impression in 2000s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, actress Zhang Ziyi appears to be coasting here, and a good thing too, as her English is about as good as Tucker's Cantonese. Predictably, the film was a massive stateside hit, duplicating the success of the original 1998 feature.
