Just as Max (Jason Behr) and Liz (Shiri Appleby) have gotten together, it would appear that Maria (Majandra Delfino) and Michael (Brendan Fehr) have broken up. In her anger, Maria tells Alex (Colin Hanks) about the mysterious connection between Max and Liz, and that Max, Isabel (Katherine Heigl), and Michael are part of a "heartless" alien clan. While Alex ponders how to approach Isabel about his discovery, Michael sets off in search of River Dog (Ned Romero), the Native American who explained the significance of the symbol engraved in a locket Isabel had found at the UFO research lab. This turns out to be a bad decision on Michael's part -- before long, he becomes violently ill, and Max vows to wait for River Dog, who must perform an ancient ritual to save Michael's life. When all is said and done, Max tells Liz that a relationship between the two of them is impossible.
