Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This documentary features an interview by David Frost with 1992 independent presidential candidate Ross Perot. Perot, a Texas billionaire and an electronics company CEO, decided to run for president when he became disenchanted with the two party political system of the United States, stating that it was unresponsive to the needs of its citizens. This message of accountability, plus Perot's offbeat, incisive wit, made him a popular figure, who early on in the presidential race actually led the polls. His insistence on fiscal responsibility by reducing the national debt struck a chord with the public. Perot's influence caused the major party candidates to reassess their positions. Many people were shocked and disappointed when Perot suddenly withdrew from the race, stating that his continued presence might be disruptive. The quixotic Perot changed his mind again later, and re-entered the race, using his vast fortune to promote his campaign. He never regained his previous standing in the polls, but his presence on the ballot may have determined the outcome of the election.
