Although Robert Taylor had portrayed less than law abiding characters before, Louis B. Mayer would never have allowed him to appear as de-glamorized as the corrupt detective he plays in Rogue Cop. But Mayer was long gone by 1954 and the new regime at M-G-M was quick to sacrifice old-fashioned glamour in favor of hard-hitting, no-nonsense Naked City-style gangster melodrama. And backed by some of the studio's hard-boiled newcomers -- Steve Forrest, Anne Francis, Janet Leigh, Alan Hale, Jr., etc. -- Taylor appears quite refreshed and revitalized. He is of course also helped immensely by Roy Rowland's "just-the-facts-ma'am" direction and a guest appearance by none other than George Raft who, as he had so many times before over at Warner Bros., dies colorfully in a hail of bullets.
