Synopsis by Jason Buchanan

As he had previously done with his 2005 film Blockade, filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa once again draws on vintage newsreel footage from the Soviet archive to offer a compelling look at the curious history of the USSR. Based on the propaganda newsreels produced by the USSR during the 1950s and '60s, Revue turns the rules of propaganda upside down in order to allow his audience to become the object of the agitprop. In doing so, the former Soviet mindset is evoked in a manner that shines an illuminating light on the communist illusion by highlighting the hardship, deprivation, and absurd rituals of the era.
