John Stanley Hale (Robert Gordon), who comes from a wealthy Southern family, is tricked into a marriage with Elizabeth Roddard (Eulalie Jensen), an actress of questionable character. He goes away for some months and is reported to be dead. Elizabeth has a friend, Betty Blair (Sylvia Breamer), who is struggling financially. To help her out, she suggests that Betty take her place as Hale's widow. She does, and she manages to save Hale's estate from some scheming relatives. The relatives, however, persist, and are halted only when Hale himself shows up, very much alive. Although he is surprised to find a different wife from the one he left, he's grateful for what Betty has done, and they wind up falling in love.
