Synopsis by Hal Erickson

The Reason Why was based on Elinor Glyn's heavy-breathing romance novel of the same name. After the death of her tosspot husband, a Russian peasant woman (Clara Kimball Young) goes to live with her wealthy uncle in London. Uncle intends to marry the heroine off to a man of his choice, but she has had her fill of matrimony and balks at the "assignment." She finally agrees to marriage, but only for the sake of her young son. Upon learning of the death of the heroine's child, her husband assumes that the kid was illegitimate and files for divorce. Eventually both husband and wife overcome their pride and reconcile their differences. Apparently, The Reason Why didn't "test" well in previews, thus the film's continuity was carved to a fare-thee-well in its final release version.
