Synopsis by Mark Deming

While hip-hop and rap music as born on the streets of New York City, over the course of three decades it has become a global phenomenon, and in this documentary filmmaker Pavel Abraham offers a look at some of the leading lights of the Czech Republic's rap scene both on and off stage. James Cole and Hugo Toxxx from the Czech rap group Supercroo and Orion from PSH are captured on stage performing for their fans, but the film also features a handful of improvised sequences in which the artists interact with people outside the world of pop music, including an expert on linguistics, a group of classical performers, famed vocalist Hana Hegerova, a minor government functionary and a bunch of kids from a Romany neighborhood. Onstage, the rappers express their ideas and identity, while they demonstrate their desire to make themselves understood to people who don't know their music in the improv sketches. RAPublic (aka Ceska RAPublika) was named "Best Documentary" at the 2009 Pilsen Film Festival.
