Synopsis by Mark Deming

A violent incident changes the way one woman looks at herself and the world in this drama from writer and director Léandre-Alain Baker. Ramata (Katoucha Niane) is a beautiful woman in her early fifties who has been married to a successful politician since she was twenty. While Ramata leads an enviable life in the eyes of others, inside she's miserably unhappy and isn't sure what to do about the drabness of her existence. The calm of Ramata's life is shattered when she's kidnapped by Ngor (Ibrahima Mbaye), a violent and irresponsible young man. Ramata is brutalized and raped by the stranger, and her husband is so traumatized by the event that he commits suicide. Ramata, however, feels curiously liberated by the event, and with no husband to rule over her, she returns to the slums that Ngor calls home to live a new life of grim pleasure. Ramata was the second and last film role for fashion model-turned-actress Katoucha Niane, who died shortly after filming was completed.
