Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

Marxist Salvador Allende became the President of Chile in 1970, and this documentary film deals with his first 14 months in office. In 1973, Allende was overthrown by a military junta (American-backed) and supposedly committed suicide. Among the topics discussed in this documentary are his nationalization of copper mines and textile mills, changes in the Mapuches' (native people) relations with the government, and the state visit of Fidel Castro. Though the film strongly favors Allende's efforts, its information content is high. Guzman was a highly trained filmmmaker and reportedly had a gift for being in the thick of things, a fact that is reflected in this film.
