Synopsis by Alice Day

In this series, American architecture is the focus, from its practical colonial origins to modern skyscrapers in the cities. Because of America's independent ideals, there has not been a reliance on either European or classical models, although their influences were evident in early designs. Pride of Place: Building the American Dream -The Search for a Usable Past traces the beginnings of uniquely American buildings, covering the humble homes of pilgrims to the stately mansions of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Architects Robert A.M. Stern and Jaquelin Robertson offer commentary.
