This two-volume reading program is a companion to and prerequisite for the GED Language Arts, Reading set. In this introductory course, the reading student is given basic instruction on the art of reading and comprehending the written word. The program guides the student through source materials, including essays, poetry, newspaper articles, magazine articles, and short stories. The student is instructed how to discern the main and minor points the author is making, as well as ways to increase comprehension and retention of the material. The student is exposed to literary devices, such as metaphors, similes, rhyme, and irony. The facility gained in the art of reading, so necessary to successful living in the modern world, is specifically geared to readying the student to pass the GED reading examination.
