A young man is sent to enter the Austrian army by the village headman. The headman has done this because the girl the headman has marked out for his son's marriage is in love with the young man being sent away. Years later, he returns with the army to prevent the villagers from celebrating a pagan ritual which predates the Austrian conquest of the region. Tragedy springs from the efforts by everyone to do what they believe is right.
