This group of programs continues to tour the universe, offering explanations for many of its mysteries, and presenting intriguing concepts and theories. In this episode of the series, the three planets closest to Earth are studied. Of the three, both Mercury and Venus have hostile environments and forbidding temperatures. Venus is approximately the same size as Earth, and its chemical makeup resembles that of the Earth. There are also similarities between the home planet and Mars, and Practical Guide to the Universe: The Universe Next Door explores the characteristics of the red planet.
