Synopsis by Sarah Ing

Toulouse-Lautrec was one of the most memorable characters of the belle époque period. As a painter and entertainer, he was unrivaled in his ability to project passion and liveliness. Popular Parisian nightlife often circled around his bohemian circle of friends. Portrait of an Artist: Toulouse-Lautrec documents the works that were created by this flamboyant figure. Toulouse-Lautrec depicted on canvas what he saw in real life: cabarets and brothels, theatres and drunken friends. His artistic eye exposed the vulnerability in extravagant lifestyles and the grotesqueness of wealth. He produced printwork and portraits, but it was his posters that gained Toulouse-Lautrec his greatest acclaim. His art served as more than an advertisement. It was a depiction of the looming revolution that was to become the 20th century.
