Synopsis by Sarah Ing

This program presents a short exploration of the work of an American realist. From her studio in Union Square in New York, Bishop observed the daily transactions of the buzzing metropolis. Her subjects were taken straight from the streets: shop girls, subway passengers, the homeless. She painted moments of the working class. Yet, Bishop's work is considered Romantic. Her use of light colors and her endowment of dignified, even regal expressions on her figures distinguished her art.
