Teens recite their "lyrics of liberation" in poetry slams in this exploration of what adult poet Bob Holman calls "the most energetic grass-roots arts movement in the country." The documentary, which culminates at the 1999 National Youth Slam in Albuquerque, N.M., profiles New York and San Francisco slammers, as well as Navajo Nation poets. And it examines teen poetry's hip-hop elements. Hip-hop provides "the shell," says poet Ablodum Oyewole (another adult), while the youngsters add "the meat."
