Review by Derek Armstrong

The critical rave on the video box declares P.C.U "an Animal House for the 1990s," but Hart Bochner and Martin Walters' film falls short of its estimable source material on all fronts. Despite an energetic Jeremy Piven, a pre-Swingers Jon Favreau, and a legion of cult followers, P.C.U won't strike the general public as much more than an annoying (and often vicious) attempt to poke fun at political correctness and deliver up a hollow handful of keg-or-bust slackers. The script does have some observant moments, especially in its understanding of modern academia. One character quips that if you know how to B.S., you can major in Game Boy, while another is writing his thesis on the Caine-Hackman theory, which posits that at least one movie featuring Michael Caine or Gene Hackman is constantly being televised. But the script goes much broader with its action, including stupid hijinx trying to transport beer in a convertible, and the Pit members throwing hamburger at protesting vegetarians. The idea of tweaking overly serious activists is okay -- the execution, however, is too severe to win anything but grimaces, even when the activists are given such over-the-top personalities that you'll want to slap them. Then again, you'll just want to slap just about everybody by the time the movie is over.
