Synopsis by Jason Buchanan

Filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal draws inspiration from Margaret Atwood's famous essay "Payback: Debt and the Shadow Side of Wealth" for this documentary examining the concept of debt from not only a financial perspective, but also from moral, economical, and spiritual viewpoints. Detailed examinations of a modern day blood feud in Albania, the controversy surrounding disgraced media magnate Conrad Black, the condemnation of BP in the wake of the Gulf oil spill, and the plight of Florida tomato growers as they fight for better working conditions reveal the high cost of ignoring our conscience in the quest for money and power.
