Synopsis by Violet LeVoit
An overweight young woman known as Patti Cake$ (Danielle Macdonald) nurtures her unlikely dreams of hip-hop superstardom while working as a caterer in a dull suburb of New Jersey. Although her alcoholic mother (Bridget Everett) is dismissive of her ambitions, Patti finally makes a breakthrough when she and a black punk rocker (Mamoudou Athie) collaborate on a song. Patti Cake$ was helmed by noted music-video director Geremy Jasper, who also wrote the screenplay and created 15 songs in a range of genres for the movie's soundtrack.
