Review by Craig Butler

In Passport to Destiny, the crux of the entire movie revolves around what Elsa Lanchester's character believes is a lucky charm given to her by her late husband. Lanchester discovers at the end of the film that the charm is a fake, but she comes to this realization long after the audience, who discovers early on that the genuine charm in Passport is Lanchester herself. An absolutely invaluable character actress, Lanchester had precious few leading roles, so Passport is worth watching for that reason alone. Sporting a Cockney accent that amuses all by itself, Lanchester imbues the part with all the whimsy, eccentricity and steely self-determination that one could desire and enlivens every frame in which she appears -- which is saying a lot. It's also saying a lot that even the Herculean efforts of Lanchester can't make Passport into a good film. The premise, of course, is simply ridiculous and probably to some viewers insulting. But at least as long as it stays a comedy, it manages to more or less get away with it; it's not fine comedic writing, but it suffices. Unfortunately, when it turns serious, things go downhill steadily. Lanchester remains sterling company, but the screenplay is simply dross.
