A compassionate and understanding look at life inside and outside the poor areas of Madras fills this Tamil feature by Durai with a humanity that any audience could appreciate. Kanniah (Narayanan), a married shop owner, is smitten by a woman who regularly passes by in front of his establishment. His ineffectual but also inoffensive way of trying to capture her attention is to put on some music that might go well with her perceived feelings that day. Neither Kanniah nor his bicycle shop are much of a recommendation to any woman and so his efforts have a certain pathos. As other characters come and go, insights are gained into a shared human condition that in the end, may not be so different from that found in the wealthier enclaves of Madras.
