Synopsis by Mark Deming

A dead man helps to clarify the personality differences between the rich and the poor in this comedy from Egypt. Tabl (Mahmoud Hamida) is a street person who likes drugs, liquor and carousing -- or at least he does when he has the money. One day, while hanging out with his friends at a bar, Tabl dies of an overdose; his buddies are genuinely upset, though one manages to get past his mourning just long enough to swipe Tabl's gold teeth. Hobba (Lebleba), Tabl's girlfriend, decides his body should be returned to the wife and child he abandoned a decade ago. However, when Hobba and her friends finally track down Tabl's family, they're treated with bourgeois disgust and the main topic of conversation is the cost of the funeral. When Hobba and the others hold an impromptu wake for Tabl, they finish out the evening so drunk they kidnap Tabl's body to show him a good time, and after a while they seem unaware that he's dead. This logic is extended by Tabl's daughter, who notes that if there's dignity in death, than by all logic Tabl is still alive.
