Synopsis by Leslie Birdwell

This is the first episode in the four-part Painting the World series, hosted by the director of the National Gallery, London, Neil MacGregor. Each episode considers the interaction between the opinions and beliefs of the time, and how certain significant pictures best illustrate the contemporary European view of the world, of the self, and the nature of God. This episode examines The Donne Triptych from 1475, painted by Hans Memlinc, the leading Flemish painter of the Bruges school. This series was originally broadcast by the BBC.
