Such stellar character actors as Victor McLaglen and Barry Fitzgerald do their utmost, but even they cannot save the S.S. Arcturus from sinking with all hands on deck, cinematically speaking. For budgetary reasons, presumably, RKO kept the action below deck, thus eliminating the scores of gaily dressed but dying extras that you would ordinarily expect in a story of a cholera outbreak on a luxury liner. The result is claustrophobic, to put it mildly, and when McLaglen and Chester Morris begin to haggle over Wendy Barrie, the whole affair becomes something of a bore. The cool Miss Barrie, meanwhile, seems to answer the deathly epidemic with typical British stoutheartedness, which is probably just as well.
