The title Otarova Vdova translates as Otar's Widow. The title character, played by Veriko Anglaparizde, endures unbearable tragedy during her long and frustrating life. As if the loss of her husband was not enough, the widow must also stand by helplessly as her son Gheorgi (G. Scenghelaia) throws his life away on a hopeless infatuation with a Georgian princess. Soon the son has also met his doom, leaving the widow more lonely and isolated than before. When it was shown at the 1958 Venice Film Festival, Otarova Vdova was greeted with a mixture of confusion and indifference.
