Synopsis by Nathan Southern
The Opéra de Lyon mounted this highly stylized 1997 stage production of Jacques Offenbach's 1858 opera bouffe Orphée aux enfers (Orpheus in the Underworld). A familiar recounting of the tragic, mythical romance of Orpheus and his bride Eurydice, it stars Yann Beuron and Natalie Dessay in those central roles. The Orchestra and Chorus of the Opéra National de Lyon and the Grenoble Chamber Orchestra provide musical accompaniment, with added involvement from the Ballet of the Grand Théâtre de Geneve. Mark Minkowski conducts, and Laurent Pelly directs for the stage.
