Review by Karl Williams

There's no denying that One Fine Day is the lightest of lightweight romantic comedies, but two likable leads with palpable chemistry work overtime to sell their parts and rescue the simple affair from becomming too vanilla. The device of using toddlers to bring a pair of harried, overworked parents together is just a little bit precious, but having the protagonists accidentally swap cell phones (in 1996, no less) is a fine and inventive modern-day plot device. George Clooney and Michelle Pheiffer have incredible chemistry, which helps foster momentum in their ongoing series of meet-cutes, which often take place on busy New York streets, in the back seats of taxis, and in what look like uncomfortably cold March rainstorms. The two seem to really like each other, in spite of their constant digs and carping. Much like the fiery dynamic betweenKatharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, the interplay between Pfeiffer and Clooney gets the audience on board with their would-be romance, despite the characters' protestations.
