Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Young Bill Hartwell (William Desmond) is the son of town drunk Tom Hartwell (Percy Challenger). Hoping to disprove the old adage "like father, like son," Bill goes to work as the village blacksmith, but it isn't long before he too succumbs to the lure of liquor. During one of his drunken episodes, Bill is led to believe that he has killed a man. Only his sweetheart Mary Lane (Mary Warren) believes in Bill's innocence, and in the end it is Mary who saves the hero from a lynch mob. Star William Desmond must have been supremely confident in his screen appeal to allow himself to be rescued by a "mere woman" in the closing reel of Old Hartwell's Cub.
