Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka
Young Yuko (Rei Kubota) and her brother Hiroshi (Yoshiyuki Saitoh) have had a somewhat difficult life after their father died in a typhoon while working in the mountains. At school, Yuko has a teacher who is warm-hearted and supportive of the young girl -- giving rise to a bit of jealousy on the part of Kazuko (Yumiko Fujita), Yuko's mother, especially since their relationship at home is not always the best. Kazuko is trying to make ends meet by working in a publishing company, but because she has to bear the responsibilities of house, work, and children alone, she is particularly harried, and her son Hiroshi complains that his sister and mother are simply running his life. The underlying tensions in the family reach a climax when the children work on a birthday party for their mother -- and she forgets it completely. A crisis sets in, and Yuko and Hiroshi escape their home for the mountains where their father died -- perhaps a first step toward a resolution of the family's unstated feelings.
